When is respirator fit testing required?

Under the OSHA Respiratory Protection standard, employees required to use tight-fitting respirators must be fit tested before initial use, whenever a different respirator facepiece is used, and at least annually thereafter. Additional testing may be needed when physical changes could affect the respirator seal.

Employees must receive respirator medical clearance before fit testing or required respirator use. KSA can coordinate medical evaluations and fit testing as connected parts of an employer’s respiratory protection program.

Qualitative and quantitative fit testing

Qualitative fit testing is a pass-or-fail method using an accepted test agent, such as saccharin or Bitrex, to detect leakage. It is commonly used for many filtering facepiece respirators, including N95 respirators, and certain half-mask respirators when the method is appropriate.

Quantitative fit testing uses an instrument to measure leakage and calculate a numerical fit factor. KSA’s testing capabilities include the TSI PortaCount platform for applicable tight-fitting respirators. The method selected depends on the respirator, the required protection level and the employer’s program.

What employees should bring

• The exact respirator make, model, style and size they will use
• Prescription eyewear or other protective equipment worn with the respirator
• Medical-clearance documentation or confirmation when required by the employer
• A clean-shaven sealing surface where the respirator contacts the face

Facial hair, eyewear, head coverings or other conditions that interfere with the sealing surface can prevent a valid fit test. Employees should follow their employer’s preparation instructions before the scheduled session.

Fit test versus user seal check

A fit test evaluates whether a specific respirator model and size adequately fits an individual. A user seal check is performed by the wearer each time the respirator is put on. A seal check is important, but it does not replace required fit testing.
