When is workplace audiometric testing required?
Under OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.95, employers must establish and maintain an audiometric testing program for employees whose noise exposure equals or exceeds an eight-hour time-weighted average of 85 decibels. The program is provided at no cost to employees and includes baseline and annual audiograms.
An annual audiogram is compared with the employee’s baseline to identify significant changes in hearing. When results indicate a possible standard threshold shift, appropriate review, notification, follow-up, and documentation may be required.
